Oct 3rd - Dec 8th 2023: Sir William Macewen exhibition

In the year before the centenary anniversary of his death, The Friends of GRI are commemorating the extraordinary Sir William Macewen

Sir William Macewen was a revolutionary.

As a surgeon he completed the first successful removal of a brain tumour. He also designed an artificial limb for soldiers injured during the First World War.

A great believer in cleanliness during his days as a surgeon – he learned from Joseph Lister and his discoveries of antisepsis – Sir William Macewen later started the concept of medical photography…and that’s just the start.

Come and join us as we explore those and the many other discoveries which have left an enduring legacy in the world of medicine, as well as his relationship with our first matron Mrs Rebecca Strong.

The exhibition will run from October 3 until December 8th at the GRI Museum.
